Hou Chun-Ming
Hou Chun-Ming has been engaged in addressing taboo subjects through his installations and woodcut prints since as early as the 1990s. His characteristically bold and ritually produced works are often closely tied to the current political and social climate of Taiwan. His latest series, Body Map, uses interview-based techniques to translate bodily desires into artistic expression. As a carrier of desire, the body goes through life recording experiences through channels of family tradition and socialization. In private one-on-one interviews, Hou Chun-Ming extracts these experiences from his subjects and translates them into painting. Since 2014 the project has had 65 participants of various gender identities.
Hou Chun-Ming (b. 1963, Chiayi, Taiwan) now lives and works in Miaoli, Taiwan. He was invited twice to attend the Venice Biennale in 1995 and 2013, and has also participated in the Taipei Biennial, the Taiwan Biennial, the Shanghai Biennial and the Busan Biennial, as well as numerous other international exhibitions.
