Luo Jr-Shin

Luo Jr-Shin’s work captures the subtleties of everyday life, condensing and magnifying it in all its absurdity. He uses objects we encounter in our daily lives to create his works, resulting in a kind of reproduced reality, but with a humorous twist. In Budding, in Blooming, in Withering is a project commissioned by ACC (Gwangju) and the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations (MuCEM) that addresses AIDS, the contemporary notion of hygiene, and the perception of others. The piece consists of AIDS prevention pamphlets printed onto the surfaces of glass bathroom shelves. Luo found these archived pamphlets at MuCEM, which has collected more than 6,000 AIDS prevention brochures, publications, and interview videos in order to document the war on AIDS since the 1980s. When the viewer’s reflection in the mirror is obstructed by the pamphlets, there is a mixture of familiarity and strangeness. The white flowers on the shelf, blooming and withering, also evoke the cycle of life and death.

Luo, Jr-Shin (b. 1984, Miaoli, Taiwan) now lives and works in Taipei. Luo has participated in  the Queens International in 2013, the 9th Taipei Biennial in 2014, The Other Face of the Moon at Asia Culture Center in Korea in 2017. His works have been exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Brazil, China, and the United States.
